Hello, just found your web site of my models! I am very flattered that you like them so much, thank you! I have a disc with some more photos on taken on a recent trip to the games workshop studios(dont know if you have read my article in the white dwarf, think it was the christmas issue) but they used some photos but not all. I would be more than happy to send you a copy of the disc if you send me an address to post it to!
I really liked your conversion work on your site, a man after my own heart! I can’t leave any model unconverted. I am loving the new vampire counts models, especially the throne wow! Bet you have yours on advance order already!
All the best,
julian

This is a comment for young olo, you have many photos from the uk golden demon competition and you requested to know who had painted the marauders in the regiment category, i have great pleasure in telling you they were mine, sorry your picture didnt work out, but they are in the decembers White Dwarf magazine. I did notice you had 1 other picture of mine, it was the gargoyle lady, i was really pleased with that model but it didnt make the final cut, i must admit i asked the judges if they had seen it, because i thought it was good enough to make the final, not to place, but a finalist and i was told it was too saucy(those weren’t the exact words, but that was what they meant!) I did laugh!
All the best, Julian

Thank you, Julian. I did read your article and enjoyed photos of your stunning marauders, just the comment under the photo in my album was outdated, but thanks again for your effort – I surely appreciate it!
I absolutely love your painting and modelling style. I think this is because it is very similar to mine, just you’re a lot better 🙂 I can hardly leave a miniature without converting it as well and like to paint my models in very limited, almost monochromatic palette. And guess what: my favourite themes (read: armies) are: undead and dark, elite warriors (VC, WoCh, DE).
I don’t think I saw your gargoyle lady unfortunately, but it is really hard to see all the fantastic GD entries – there’s just too many, yet doubled with Armies on Parade! If you have any more pictures of your great stuff, I’d love to see them – they are a great, great inspiration for a humble hobbyist like myself.

Hello, great to hear from you, thanks for the kind comments, really nice to know you also paint in a monochromatic style! Do you find the black and white artwork more inspiring than the full colour paintings! I do, lol. I mentioned the gargoyle beacause she was on your photos taken at games day, somewhere near the bottom i think! Shes crouching down on a tall branch, high above the base!
Seems like we both go for the darker armies, not just in colour but in the sense of the ‘baddies!’
Much more scope for conversions! The only other photos of my stuff i can think of is on the unofficial demon winners site, check out my 2009 regiment and diorama and in 2008 my regiment if you havent already seen them. Think those dates are correct! lol All the best, Julian

Ahhh, so it was also your work (the gargoyle lady on my photo). That would explain why it caught my eye (hence the picture)! Yes, I’ve seen both your Ogres and Dryads diorama (and few older ones as well).

Hi mate, glad you liked the gargoyle lady, i ended up doing a regiment of them! I always do that, i make 1 model for the single competition, then i enjoy making it so much i make some more and have an entry for the regiment or squad! Lol.
What are you working on at the moment?

Painting 5 regular Blood Knights (I love the models as they are) and converting a unit of 15 Black Knights: TK skeleton steeds, Imperial Cav barding, DE Cold One Knight riders legs, Grave guard torso, head and arms, Cold One riders lance. Have 5 done and painted already, now converting 10 more. They are nowhere close to your awesome cav, but I am still proud of them 🙂
Are you working on something Chaos-realated now? Or have any plans on doing any warriors/marauders maybe? I’d love to see some more of these!

Hi mate, those black knights sound wicked! I must say i really like the new GW plastic ones that are just released! I wish i had used the dark elf cold one lances! What shields are you using?
I’m working on a 54mm female vampire converted from the sevorina model from the inquisitor range, more or less finished it, just not sure on my colours, or lack of them! Lol

Hi guys! Wow, just wanted to say that I really love Julian Bayliss’ work – the colours, conversions, themes – they’re really inspiring! I read the ‘Blanchitsu’ article in WD384 (December issue) just when I happened to be thinking about starting a Marauder warband, and it’s like Julian invaded my imagination, lol. Anyways, I was really hoping for some more pictures (the WD article has left me hungry for more!) and perhaps some info on the conversions used for the marauders – they really are fantastic. Hope to hear from any of you!
Cheers.

Hi Ayden, thanks for your kind comments, i really appreciate them. If you send me your email address i can send some photos of my models taken from that WD article that weren’t used.My own photos never work out! Lol.
All the parts for the marauders were either GW bits or green stuff.Bodies; marauders, beastmen and a deamonette. Arms; marauders, beastmen,1 goblin bowman arm! Lots of the muscles green stuff to exagerate them! Legs; marauders(cut and repositioned and green stuff to fill gaps) Deamonette legs carved to look more human.Heads; flagellants, marauders, space wolf. I used alot of fur effect to cover up joins etc.
The idea for the warband started with the champion, hes the guy with the horns on his head and 2 axes.He was meant to be so tough he kills demons to prove it.On the base is the remains of a crushed blood letter head minus the horns, which our hero now wears as a helm to show his strength.I enjoyed making him so much i decided to make a warband for him.I wouldn’t call it a regiment as they are all characters in their own right and i have a story for each of them!
My email address is julianbayliss@aol.com I look forward to hearing from you and i will send you some pics!
I can give you more detailed desciptions of making the marauders on email if you need it, Cheers,
Julian

Hallo Julian, just found this page with the photos of your army and I love. They are amazing! I wonder how you create those colours? If am allowed to know. I also love the corpse cart conversion, how did you make that? Again awesome models!

Hi Jeremy, thanks for the positive comments, really kind. The colour palette all stems around a mid-grey, used to use codex grey, changed now i think! I mix in rotting flesh(paint not the real thing! lol) and bleached bone to get highlights, then darken it all with devlan mud and badab black. Added some turquoise ink to the armour and some robes to try to get an unwordly feel to the models. All painted in an expressive style, no crisp details. The armour is boltgun metal, then washed down to look old.
The corpse cart/boat of the ferryman(carrion) was made using a rib cage from a plastic dinosaur toy skeleton. You could use the actual corpse cart though Then i used pieces of card for boarding deck and sides. Again not too precise. Makes it look like theres some magical force keeping it afloat. Then as usual i stuck loads of bits all over it, great fun until you come to paint it all! (i must remember not to keep doing that!)
Thanks for getting in touch, nice to hear from you. Feel free to ask anything else or share pics or your models. julianbayliss@aol.com
